Chapter Thirty-Five

Centarus

Genna had other motives for offering to teleport Raven and Soroyan to the portal, but she wasn’t about to tell anyone, even if she was starting to trust them. She wasn’t even sure what it was she was really searching for. Though, she couldn’t help but wonder if Caden suspected. She’d told him about the Centarus beast and when she offered Soroyan and Raven an instant ride, the look in Caden’s eyes said he might know what she be doing.

She didn’t know why it mattered, and maybe it didn’t, but Caden was always the one to pull her from her dreams as they held her tight. He even tried to get her to talk about them. Of course she refused. She didn’t understand why he be so concerned.

“Why won’t you talk to me?” Caden asked, not for the first time. “It’s not like I’m going to tell anyone all your secrets.”

She knew Caden spoke true, cause he didn’t know all her secrets. Still, she ached to tell him, but it wouldn’t come out. Caden was hers to protect. She never wanted to see that same fear or despair in his eyes that she had seen so often when he lived under his mother’s rule, and she locked in a cage. “I told you abouts the Centarus beast.”

“And nothing more.”

Caden. He be her weakness, and she still didn’t know what to do with him.

He asked her if she wanted him to go, and she said maybe, but then a horrible feeling had filled her. It surprised her. She wanted him to go. Didn’t she? Okay, maybe not. Or not yet. Yes, that was it, just not yet. Her making friends was coming along. She already had Xeata, but the others, well, them she didn’t know about.

Genna stood a good distance away as Raven activated the portal.

A faint, age-old hum of ancient magic throbbed just below and beyond this time and place. Genna closed her eyes and inhaled, drawing in as much of the magic as she could hold. Then she opened her eyes.

Her own magics, which had been slowly growing over the last year, itched in reaction. It wanted out. Raven and Soroyan stepped into the blinding light and disappeared. The portal closed as if it had never been.

Alone, Genna released just a little of her power. Multihued flames danced along her palms.

She circled the area, trying to tap into the power just out of reach, but it was slippery. Caden came to mind again, though she had no idea why thoughts of him kept intruding.

Well, maybe ’cause she left without saying bye, or telling him where she be going. Though Caden should be used to that, and really, he’d have to be deaf if he hadn’t overheard that she was giving Zander-daddy’s sister and her new dark wolfy mate, a ride to the portal. Everyone in the house knew.

Genna let out a little growl, not liking the feeling of guilt that she hadn’t at least said when she’d be back, or anything to Caden.
